The maker was unknown, suspected to be Japanese, and seemed like a far better shape and a better attachment design that might work, so I gulped and sprang for it to the tune of thirty bucks. (Though when I consider what I spent on buying, shipping and powder coating the English rack that’s now on the Rivvy, this may have been a bargain. Don’t tell my partner.)</div><div><br /></div><div>Today I installed it on the Peugeot. And I learned two things: first, these cool, old saddlebag support racks are designed to work on road frames, where these less space between the seat stays and the rear wheel and between the rear wheel and the installed rack. Secondly, those design characteristics mean that any vintage support may work, but will look a little odd on a mountain bike, even an older one.</div><div><br /></div><div>Still, I forged ahead. And along the way, I had to do some cutting and filing in order to accommodate the frame’s rack eyelets because I didn’t want to cut them off. It took some doing, but in the end I made it work. Again, it’s not a perfect fit, and it won’t be on a mountain bike, but it makes me happier than the previous rack did.</div><div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqdX3R8PIYHCkCd0tqlrNk4EnAFgSnreV-eg_nQGVuuz0MfmjH6-awcLK3oCanAAYA8xjVCV0WMdt-YzOKVY_DmU3g3VdSr2oG11e-tJPnLznPXYcJugw7kw-WZ6LqWhw9NIRwW8BXKWmZp8EsVsI0BL2VYdEhjNk3Jnutl3waqb3_AIe8pyAB9mheovyc/s2719/IMG_7139.jpeg" style="display: inline; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1547" data-original-width="2719" height="228" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqdX3R8PIYHCkCd0tqlrNk4EnAFgSnreV-eg_nQGVuuz0MfmjH6-awcLK3oCanAAYA8xjVCV0WMdt-YzOKVY_DmU3g3VdSr2oG11e-tJPnLznPXYcJugw7kw-WZ6LqWhw9NIRwW8BXKWmZp8EsVsI0BL2VYdEhjNk3Jnutl3waqb3_AIe8pyAB9mheovyc/w401-h228/IMG_7139.jpeg" width="401" /></a> </div></div><div><br /></div><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimV9mFLOYmc7vIdwdFseay5QV9cjlPahPRRp8raK33E6MoohJ7MlSEJ3-yGj4PTNWhFm6fZ3J5uIZ6Dgr3nNPYoCuJ8SqPWoQop3rR7srTgYVHEHV5hnPtLe7erqcr4dn6qtf_8sMKzkPKlhzq6HdPriyo2omHFJWurSdpE5xDRd5ArVrmT8uvyA5g5Fb0/s3037/IMG_7138.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3037" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimV9mFLOYmc7vIdwdFseay5QV9cjlPahPRRp8raK33E6MoohJ7MlSEJ3-yGj4PTNWhFm6fZ3J5uIZ6Dgr3nNPYoCuJ8SqPWoQop3rR7srTgYVHEHV5hnPtLe7erqcr4dn6qtf_8sMKzkPKlhzq6HdPriyo2omHFJWurSdpE5xDRd5ArVrmT8uvyA5g5Fb0/s320/IMG_7138.jpeg" width="319" /></a></div><div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8ZPiomjwp_w6aSZjwQ75k_c7w-JFsKzUJDTF95-UyxD-qzHZltMYEs8XprPuQcuy9fxJ3CW70n8r0Ucblvhywo8hyphenhyphen59JO4xMlyhP-ima37GMYR06MmgrjHEY9i91qglaIMfpdpY64q0tGdBWPCxFdV6SG8z1b7n7Eo7u_nyDQKx6w2FMmAP93jcBxGj2D/s2815/IMG_7140.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2815" data-original-width="2555" height="287" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8ZPiomjwp_w6aSZjwQ75k_c7w-JFsKzUJDTF95-UyxD-qzHZltMYEs8XprPuQcuy9fxJ3CW70n8r0Ucblvhywo8hyphenhyphen59JO4xMlyhP-ima37GMYR06MmgrjHEY9i91qglaIMfpdpY64q0tGdBWPCxFdV6SG8z1b7n7Eo7u_nyDQKx6w2FMmAP93jcBxGj2D/w260-h287/IMG_7140.jpeg" width="260" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwDer1NhIzjRhvaExZTYziBhaB_BkFXI713_RAZEdNG7aS8bFmBpDnR9smsNn8geJYMCT6vChw_gYCGVRMopBeCVxc2DLeHHuA06P3iS4cvpFqAXycoXg2wPYvOzTelK9HpWYrVehC0p7ODgGZ-es7O2L7AVn5dhRE6H67lo82zE8sydVBgyQhq1eT-ehyphenhyphen/s4032/IMG_7141.jpeg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="442" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwDer1NhIzjRhvaExZTYziBhaB_BkFXI713_RAZEdNG7aS8bFmBpDnR9smsNn8geJYMCT6vChw_gYCGVRMopBeCVxc2DLeHHuA06P3iS4cvpFqAXycoXg2wPYvOzTelK9HpWYrVehC0p7ODgGZ-es7O2L7AVn5dhRE6H67lo82zE8sydVBgyQhq1eT-ehyphenhyphen/w332-h442/IMG_7141.jpeg" width="332" /></a></div>Getting the clamps to fit inside the space between the sear stays and above the brake cable hanger was a tight fit. Squeezing the ends together hurt my hands and I had to try several times before I was successful.</div><div><br /></div><div>Then I had to remove the rack and cut and file space to fit around the frame’s rack eyelets, which I didn’t want to remove in case I wanted to use a full-sized rack later on.</div><div><br /></div><div>The aluminum alloy rack came slightly bent out of alignment, and I had to be very careful about how much pressure I used to realign it so I didn’t break it. In the end, with several adjustments in a well-padded bench vise, I got the lower half of the clamps to properly align. If I want to bring the upper half of the clamps into better alignment I might have to use a hammer and punch, after zip-tying the lower halves into place and letting the outer-pushing spring of the rack do its job, I find that it’s holding solidly enough for now. I’ll add thicker zip ties to the top halves if I think it’s needed.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUgKakfp3-F_cMSbVgSbiMq8vmtL1Tes7cszhMnQcWLArzOVGEbtL54aBZSlCWR6X9k6xzsUMghT9zH20oLFwguIv8rCkhK3EUm5LtDnEDxEywAApvqUJSXGKOW6cIJEdG-GK0CXe5wjrSBWcI-2WqV34kHHieBq3tM6i4GSRSkDdVzTUi5pPdBgpHGwYV/s3024/IMG_7142.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUgKakfp3-F_cMSbVgSbiMq8vmtL1Tes7cszhMnQcWLArzOVGEbtL54aBZSlCWR6X9k6xzsUMghT9zH20oLFwguIv8rCkhK3EUm5LtDnEDxEywAApvqUJSXGKOW6cIJEdG-GK0CXe5wjrSBWcI-2WqV34kHHieBq3tM6i4GSRSkDdVzTUi5pPdBgpHGwYV/s320/IMG_7142.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhD67L742VvTaogEmlipoBytK3GO7JTrqpApkUbPurWi8jYE9xSdXRtLhGYeO2-46SBextqpAFFbx85tw-qGKAP9qQq_2BcjQAjf3bFlRys8yN-a4-UOyusgoHQfVTCiLsbmc-Mg5pCNtWSnPuPaznzJOWshHNcg4s3JmPG4wbvqX7u61bot1cjNPlaHh0v/s3024/IMG_7144.jpeg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="3024" height="450" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhD67L742VvTaogEmlipoBytK3GO7JTrqpApkUbPurWi8jYE9xSdXRtLhGYeO2-46SBextqpAFFbx85tw-qGKAP9qQq_2BcjQAjf3bFlRys8yN-a4-UOyusgoHQfVTCiLsbmc-Mg5pCNtWSnPuPaznzJOWshHNcg4s3JmPG4wbvqX7u61bot1cjNPlaHh0v/w450-h450/IMG_7144.jpeg" width="450" /></a></div><br /><div><br /></div></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>If I tie the rear of the bag to the seatpost and close the bag, it sits well enough on the support that the support actually makes sense. If you look closely at the first photo, you’ll see that the end of the rack flares up just slightly, a nice touch that helps keep the bottom of the bag from rolling off the back of the rack. A coroplast stiffener inside the bottom panel of the bag may help reinforce that aspect. I’ll cut and install that tomorrow and see if it does.</div>bikelovejoneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16141991025526354179noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4817618840776532991.post-34762322535270464322024-03-22T12:36:00.000-07:002024-03-22T12:36:17.750-07:00Let’s do something stupid: Ladd’s 500<p>IT. IS. ON!</p><p>Ladd’s 500 returns for another day of bicycle mayhem.</p><p>Saturday, April 13 at Ladd’s Circle.</p><p>“Let’s do something stupid!”</p><p>Here’s the deal. Every year this event has grown in popularity, and every year the cost of putting it on has risen. David Robinson has been throwing this party out of his own pocket since 2016, but with permit costs rising upwards of $1200 (!!) it’s not feasible to keep expecting one guy to do all the heavy lifting.</p><p>So I’m going to suggest that, if you plan to show up to ride or watch, bring a few dollar bills with you, ask around for David (he’ll be in the middle of the circle with several hundred other people), and press the cash into his hand as a thank-you for all his hard work, and to help defray his out-of-pocket costs. </p><p>See you on the 13th.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjeoUfWmuudHCIHax3aQRc6eRPV8uGShB__E7a2xwuJEdjiJqtBBKCOQB4RMD-K_yQ2ps-LVyqsfdTfNPbSahc9oiZ9LeBso2O2RSVKkp7ynKeuohimuD7X8EMijslQszC99vG1UwNWwLMtPwDDo0oVVCpTDWtFuatRlJiFVuYGsG5U-KT4fIMWxUMEZw4/s2521/IMG_4653.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1891" data-original-width="2521" height="281" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjeoUfWmuudHCIHax3aQRc6eRPV8uGShB__E7a2xwuJEdjiJqtBBKCOQB4RMD-K_yQ2ps-LVyqsfdTfNPbSahc9oiZ9LeBso2O2RSVKkp7ynKeuohimuD7X8EMijslQszC99vG1UwNWwLMtPwDDo0oVVCpTDWtFuatRlJiFVuYGsG5U-KT4fIMWxUMEZw4/w375-h281/IMG_4653.jpeg" width="375" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><br /><p><br /></p>bikelovejoneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16141991025526354179noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4817618840776532991.post-49698714431059415662024-03-20T20:20:00.000-07:002024-03-20T20:20:44.752-07:00Bike Happy Hour and getting my bearings again<p>#bikehappyhourpdx tonight was awesome. </p><p>Hung out with a mix of new and old friends, excellent fries and fabulous #bikeogling — plus a sweet invitation to put my bicycle knowledge to work as a volunteer at @bikefarmpdx ! James from Bike Farm assures me I wouldn’t have to turn wrenches, and that I can talk someone through a repair and help them learn how to do it</p><p>I think I’m gonna take them up on the idea.</p><p>As long as no meetings are involved. 🤣</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; You’ll find all kinds of bicycles to ogle, delicious food and drink, and some of the nicest folks around. Sometimes it’s just casual conversation, other times Jonathan (Maus, your host and founder of BikePortland.org) will invite local bike geeks on government and advocacy to come and field questions about bicycle transportation policy. It’s often interesting, and always fun.<div><br /></div><div>And next week, I hope to gather some donations of stainless steel water bottles, to wash and regift to Blanchet House to hand out to people in need who are living outside. LOWER PRICE<p>As much as I have enjoyed this bike, the time has come where I can no longer pedal a singlespeed bike.</p><p>My knees simply cannot handle it anymore.</p><p>So as of today, it’s for sale.</p><p>Steel frame, 21” c-t, top tube 22” c-c. Ideal for someone between 5’ 6” and 5’ 8” tall.</p><p>Singlespeed with freewheel and hand brakes.</p><p>Converted to 26”/559 wheels with long reach calipers.</p><p>Special additions include Brooks B-17 saddle, PDW Bodega Basket, Karrimore saddlebag, Misfit Psycles handlebar. I could take these off and sell separately, but together they really complete the bike.</p><p>Upright, comfortable ride, perfect for around town riding.</p><p>Conversion and overhaul was done by a professional shop mechanic.</p><p>As it sits, I’d like $225 cash. NEW LOWER PRICE</p><p>If you want, I can swap in cheaper saddle and remove basket and saddlebag for less money.</p><p>PM me for a meetup.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsaPkNTLxcOMjXvyXv9xzpFYNqBN3SHDJCrK0RQAXVZKVVBblMzvM33K5PqDWOdLKUt2mCfC59Lle2o-of4thi5PYPLI45o-UXzLgYeH1hzoEcfPRxOKvHTBkiBwunXKHk6WU07uGpF3VtCgkbBIGAPc7_-DR_ju4a2hyN93QPdMP65a1YPHBO1t471avE/s2891/IMG_6977.jpeg" style="clear: left; Jonathan Maus (our host) was thrilled at the turnout, and held forth about this and that thing and candidate in the upcoming election, where we will chosoe a new, more representational City Council and Mayor. I was more involved in a conversation about how we will all need a very long time -- perhaps a generation or more -- to really process the number that Covid did on us individually and collectively.<br />I stayed for about ninety minutes and could feel my energy draining, so I left, riding all the way to Lloyd Center before tossing my bike on the bus to get up the hill. <br />Whenever I stopped to catch my breath, I looked up at the sky, which was the most beautiful thing I saw this evening. Portland skies are often beautiful during the rainy season, so I made it a point to notice.<br />It was cold.<br />My knees hurt, most likely from the cold and from not having ridden very much.<br />My hands hurt whenever I leaned too hard on the handlebars or when I applied the brakes.<br />I could feel how out of shape I'd become over the last five years.<br />Quite frankly, Covid had done a number on me, too, and it was highly unlikely that I'd get most of my fitness back. <br />When I got home, I was tired and melancholy and achy.<br />Tonight is my second night with the CPAP machine, and I understand it could take several days or more to grow used to it. <br /><br />I feel positively assailed these days by so much change and I don't like it.<br /><br />I'm glad I could still ride my bike, but it was such a hard won moment of victory that I'm paying for with achy knees and a tired spirit.<br /><br />I hope things will improve when the weather warms a little.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEQ3mgppcm8CXQSRtP6w-GJm54JNV00jtDtl-3AuXpqfXud49ThKEbBInaqEpIf_i58-rP7fh-p0_NxqgeI8iN8o5Nrr88s7IwsnworIPwnwBA7UHluSEVBCocWstz5rvIFkx7PznnI3ph6L5SKZ0c8x7W7Lu_B2Zr2IHzFUoHAsY3Tb1tk8QRwMdSQAUC/s3366/IMG_6751.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; I was there in Waldport that magical summer of 1994 when Quinn painted the sign, and it hung in my shed for twenty years. Now it’s going to another career bicycle mechanic who understands the importance of lore. Tom asked me to sign the back for him and I did.</p><p>I believe Quinn would be pleased.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhz41bBIPL5CcDauJygOBXUnRo_uI27984kJ3-3TJy-JLLw-O90l_1wJlQT9sPQVus3K53pyfnms2NMTw3DviyoAssds2QzhbwBkdgT6l5d6LQmlY8LSGQOoF5-gwtR-slEUIzQGbMtm6oKmycitTcQiB4CNNo3ybWf00e4Sd6vU6xGKxNaxmsayXzfJRWD/s960/17990829_1170516513076877_4125458943599797202_n.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="554" data-original-width="960" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhz41bBIPL5CcDauJygOBXUnRo_uI27984kJ3-3TJy-JLLw-O90l_1wJlQT9sPQVus3K53pyfnms2NMTw3DviyoAssds2QzhbwBkdgT6l5d6LQmlY8LSGQOoF5-gwtR-slEUIzQGbMtm6oKmycitTcQiB4CNNo3ybWf00e4Sd6vU6xGKxNaxmsayXzfJRWD/w414-h239/17990829_1170516513076877_4125458943599797202_n.jpg" width="414" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>bikelovejoneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16141991025526354179noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4817618840776532991.post-81696389803895800942024-02-11T17:34:00.000-08:002024-02-11T17:34:49.031-08:00I admit to some schadenfreude here.<p>Yeah, I know.</p><p>But this warmed my heart.</p><p><a href="https://www.yahoo.com/news/robotaxi-vandalized-set-ablaze-crowd-203601455.html">https://www.yahoo.com/news/robotaxi-vandalized-set-ablaze-crowd-203601455.</a></p><p>The driverless car is right down there with Elon Musk and a cashless economy in my list of Things That Are Bad For Our Souls.</p><p>So when a crowd in San Francisco destroyed a driverless “Robocab” and then stood around to watch it burn, I admit that I giggled with glee.</p><p>Have a good week.</p>bikelovejoneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16141991025526354179noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4817618840776532991.post-18009772055833845862024-02-10T14:11:00.000-08:002024-02-10T14:11:33.130-08:00The end of the Bicycle Brain Trust.<p>When we bought our little house in 2003, it did not come with a basement or garage.<br />Fortunately, we'd been gifted a stack of Home Depot gift cards as wedding presents.<br />They totaled enough for a healthy down payment on a Tuff Shed, and allowed me to set up a home repair shop. <br />I've enjoyed using this space for twenty years and being a local Bike Lady to all who asked for help.<br /><br />With all the hand troubles happening and my disability claim in
progress, I've decided it's time to close the Bicycle Brain Trust and
let go of that part of my identity. I'll be a fully-retired bicycle
mechanic, no longer taking in bikes to repair and/or donate elsewhere. There are more than enough other folks doing this work in Portland now and I am content.<br /><br />In a couple of days, a bike industry friend is coming over to buy the big tools, and most of my stash of parts. I am winnowing down my holdings to two bikes and enough small tools and parts for me to minimally maintain my own bikes.<br /><br />I have been blessed to be the Bicycle Lady for over thirty years, and I am blessed to be able to set that aside on my terms and just enjoy riding my bike when I feel like it. I have no regrets.<br /><br />It has been a truly wonderful ride.<br /><br />Don't worry! I'll still ride my bike, and share my jaded opinions about the bicycle industry and offer ride reports right here at my blog. Thanks for reading!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinJoJGOLMXClUAHog08nerVgw9Jv7jHRK29qyZlqY7OEU09NtQH2qZP7lEw8MxpmQYfVwitJwwVKRicvdGmiacFN3Iibo8BnwT5APuCTU3OdCOhnGcgfjCYXvxc4wPR4L0uWA80gcyS6iKJm5SDH-4mxLSHRUhIEyZtB_7auzkTRfcLKyrJNOYDRLiLuqq/s500/bethatCCC.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; Unless you're a racer, weight ought to be farther down on the priority list (though I know that an awful lot of non-racers are still weight weenies, I just don't understand why).<br /><br />Here are three examples of very nice upright handlebars that are ideal for commuting and touring.</p><p>Nitto makes incredible products that undergo rigorous product testing. I have a pair of Nitto North Road bars on my All-Rounder, and I bought them while I still worked at Citybikes. I was able to get a pair of "scratch and dent" bars on a discount from a dealer rep, or otherwise I wouldn't have sprung for them. I wanted a more swept-back reach and those gave me exactly that. The original North Road bar came in your choice of aluminum alloy (expensive) or CrMO (slightly less expensive). I chose the steel bar and have been happy ever since.<br /><br />Nitto also makes bars for Rivendell, according to their suggestions. Here's an example currently available online. I believe Rivendell sells this new for around $200.<br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_XZGKejecyMLzIXfKFNC3vqTa4Q7BmM7wrjhxTyCQ7660AvjRRk4SjJe01OQJoLolxmIKgCEnp7KBPot-vFWu2zhQ36HAtYV06u8uUOE1xO88TUDmb-OMKUmT__7vGMUfhJGrbVfN74OBnvBGp2dkGeJ3lR4NpzT2-b9z94BO9uhDrdD9n4uh_Q7CYPGX/s1184/Screen%20Shot%202024-02-08%20at%208.03.47%20PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="538" data-original-width="1184" height="215" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_XZGKejecyMLzIXfKFNC3vqTa4Q7BmM7wrjhxTyCQ7660AvjRRk4SjJe01OQJoLolxmIKgCEnp7KBPot-vFWu2zhQ36HAtYV06u8uUOE1xO88TUDmb-OMKUmT__7vGMUfhJGrbVfN74OBnvBGp2dkGeJ3lR4NpzT2-b9z94BO9uhDrdD9n4uh_Q7CYPGX/w474-h215/Screen%20Shot%202024-02-08%20at%208.03.47%20PM.png" width="474" /></a></div><p></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p>When I was retrofitting the Peugeot, I wanted a similarly designed bar but didn't want to spend a lot of money on what would be a secondary bike. So I sprang for twenty-five bucks plus shipping for an Elson Touring bar. It's basically a cheap copy of the North Road in steel, similar enough in shape and reach to the North Road to make me happy, and it works just fine.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfJjrFwqAZVCjZefA1Yul8pWLQ-d0i17zoiuvP2Ekr8zDGjyNk0EbtQgm7eOgkJ8KUYpT0k2joMi46ESoHbQ_OkslwIEnnMRkHChozSs7voX5wDj_SJYh1emMK-iZL2TlO09C6fljL8tKX3EPWYYOKzDJ0pEQ4rvyV2jY8WPXW16Xq7uVPs9tvcmD3m2t2/s2823/elson%20touring%20bar.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1638" data-original-width="2823" height="186" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfJjrFwqAZVCjZefA1Yul8pWLQ-d0i17zoiuvP2Ekr8zDGjyNk0EbtQgm7eOgkJ8KUYpT0k2joMi46ESoHbQ_OkslwIEnnMRkHChozSs7voX5wDj_SJYh1emMK-iZL2TlO09C6fljL8tKX3EPWYYOKzDJ0pEQ4rvyV2jY8WPXW16Xq7uVPs9tvcmD3m2t2/s320/elson%20touring%20bar.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p>The last example I'll share is one I've used on many bikes, including my Rivendell when I first built it up: Wald Model 8095 is a simple, cheap touring bar that's made in the USA and is durable enough for years of daily commuting (which is what I did with mine for over a decade before finding the North Roads on discount). I still love this bar. It puts my hands in a comfortable position that's kind to my wrists, and on the right stem it can ease the strain on my back. I still recommend this bar to anyone looking to convert from drops to uprights. It's a very affordable way to convert your bike and see what you think of riding more upright without spending a fortune.<br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkyuLawdZo5WiT6UTwB8SSsgiLLYDOP6ynQHWgYLaNChFUwV2Ch4etQ5KWd6m-xkbQdSYkqoxOZ1M4XyllKYJ5pTEvLq28EaTKMXOxdSQuKmLcs0OGuOAuEzITLslMZ8eJU4D_aurIsFrwUzLEPfm1cCU3HvERiXON479aFlb9reC4k4QUwlgI-ZRA1RwJ/s1212/Screen%20Shot%202024-02-08%20at%208.06.26%20PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="518" data-original-width="1212" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkyuLawdZo5WiT6UTwB8SSsgiLLYDOP6ynQHWgYLaNChFUwV2Ch4etQ5KWd6m-xkbQdSYkqoxOZ1M4XyllKYJ5pTEvLq28EaTKMXOxdSQuKmLcs0OGuOAuEzITLslMZ8eJU4D_aurIsFrwUzLEPfm1cCU3HvERiXON479aFlb9reC4k4QUwlgI-ZRA1RwJ/w467-h200/Screen%20Shot%202024-02-08%20at%208.06.26%20PM.png" width="467" /></a></div><p></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p>Each of these handlebars will make a fine upright position on a bike. <br /><br />And while the Wald bar CAN break, I've seen only one of these break in thirty years of turning wrenches. And I still use one now, on my singlespeed bike. I know that the likelihood of breaking in anything other than decades of wear and tear and a crash is incredibly low if installed correctly.<br /><br />Nitto makes an amazing handlebar, and a strong one. The likelihood of breaking from daily wear and tear is even lower than on the Wald bar. But the difference isn't great enough in my book to justify the difference in price. And I'm certain that it isn't the only reason a rider will choose a Japanese-made Nitto bar over an American-made Wald bar.<br /><br />I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that cache is part of the equation here. Nitto got more famous in the Amnerican market when Rivendell hyped it in their catalogs, and Rivendell bikes grew in fame and cache among a certain segment of the bicycle market. And that, I think, is why many buyers don't mind the great difference in price between the two.<br /><br />The third bar, the Elson, is a newcomer to the market, presumably made in China (judging by the price) and sold with a "cool" model name to highlight the appropriateness of the model among the stylish tourist set. It leans a lot harder towards the Wald end of the scale, but it's made of steel and I'm comfortable using it on my bike.<br /><br />Consider all the ways in which Rivendell's marketing has influenced the bike market over the last three decades, and you'll see leather (and imitation leather) saddles, upright touring bars, baskets and canvas saddlebags, and all the rest on many models of "city" and "touring" bikes across the pricing spectrum. <br /><br />Now that I'm out of the industry and can 't afford even discounted nicer parts, I'm content to look for more affordable parts and older technologies that work quite well on my bike.<br /><br />If you want to buy the Nitto bar because you specifically dig Nitto products, by all means dive in and enjoy yourself. Coffee, credit union, grocery. The Peugeot rides smoothly and easily, though there’s a noticeable leap between the third and second freewheel cogs that I may want to address later.</p><p>The rain and colder temps return tomorrow. I’m torn between an open mic and Bike Happy Hour on Wednesday night, because I can’t be in two places at once. </p><p>Still, really lovely to ride today.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; I’ve got a crash-and-dent Stanley coffee pot that should work fine on the road. I will need to find a better, smaller solution to put out the flame, maybe a tin jar lid with a small handle attached or something. The handles on the side of the stove are helpful for opening and closing, though to open it while the flame is going I’ll probably use some small needle nose pliers or similar to pull back the latch.</p><p>As for the coffee maker, the pour-over setup works efficiently, and the metal filter means an end to having to use paper filters. I bought mine at a discount as “new, open box,” which means it did not include instructions. So it took a minute to figure out that the filter was there to keep the grounds OUT of the coffee, NOT to hold them. The steel construction seems durable and it’s easy to clean afterwards. If I’m being really fussy, I wish the handle was shaped with more comfort in mind, but that’s a minor quibble, and if I want I can always add a little padding myself. (If you have a favorite mug that will work, <a href="https://www.stanley1913.com/products/classic-perfect-brew-pour-over?variant=39681113391163&currency=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=max-coffee&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAk9itBhASEiwA1my_6-c371dBm_RZe1U3YNsuM7Touv0AOqhQnvE8eDzuGaYhSiknZuxNmRoCQ-8QAvD_BwE">you can buy the pour-over part separately</a>.)</p><p>I’ll want to adjust how much ground coffee I need for a perfect cup but this is an excellent start.</p><p>Someone gave me a cheap, simple stainless steel hand-crank grinder, but I think to start I’ll just bring some pre-ground coffee in a little jar from home for awhile, and see if I want to complicate things further later on.</p><p>I feel confident about my next coffee outing. Hopefully the weather will cooperate.</p><p>#ridebikesdrinkcoffee</p><p>#alwaysbecoffeeneuring</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTj6gBxVDKGresKemSgpcXeyUmeOwgP2Cmd_nlKjtTon7KOteqsF4V7moae98wXn2SZv9jDLuwdNzbDszVoID2e7yXBmAWX8ePfD5I8M_Ciy8RhnYes-WBvIV67HkzQjsAESHTpVIeh14XinRIzxBUuiQdWXtwlFkqXHPG8XSSmwZWJI5O7K4m4VDNWJRg/s960/IMG_4182.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="960" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTj6gBxVDKGresKemSgpcXeyUmeOwgP2Cmd_nlKjtTon7KOteqsF4V7moae98wXn2SZv9jDLuwdNzbDszVoID2e7yXBmAWX8ePfD5I8M_Ciy8RhnYes-WBvIV67HkzQjsAESHTpVIeh14XinRIzxBUuiQdWXtwlFkqXHPG8XSSmwZWJI5O7K4m4VDNWJRg/s320/IMG_4182.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_0bIM1rx_Vv7S6-gFrKO4OYTI-pNLwod2VBmKQJMm4mgIHiLGwsbbZy6dQE7nZ9ZiTBe8uKGiNNfMCPhe96D9biDvWVmG1DRdN5bKWIsp4di7E11mJ4JQh5nJv2byGrZoZJX-B2ljz2yZ3xdSupNt484HpJ-BSENDHz96ckNMiuujz3ncbJCN82kVebqW/s2048/IMG_4183.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="427" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_0bIM1rx_Vv7S6-gFrKO4OYTI-pNLwod2VBmKQJMm4mgIHiLGwsbbZy6dQE7nZ9ZiTBe8uKGiNNfMCPhe96D9biDvWVmG1DRdN5bKWIsp4di7E11mJ4JQh5nJv2byGrZoZJX-B2ljz2yZ3xdSupNt484HpJ-BSENDHz96ckNMiuujz3ncbJCN82kVebqW/w320-h427/IMG_4183.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='457' height='380' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dyP6kHrmSqCsNDBhCRQ9x_qLcRvJUPVxp77MRaha5t2TEQv9wteUoc0efK07lKjoVWIru9qWZRxaPqTpfYc2w' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><br /><p><br /></p>bikelovejoneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16141991025526354179noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4817618840776532991.post-56168197844045953052024-01-25T18:03:00.000-08:002024-01-25T18:03:49.608-08:00Coffee Outside, finally<p> For off-season and other Coffeeneuring, going forward:</p><p>I’ve scored a robust Sterno stove and this new pour-over system so I can finally make my own #coffeeoutside in 2024!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj159KGY1_GYa3JJ0iUpXbbTLtbJp3H3oHEwtnfvtVtfvROY81haDz-flRpKwJ4_P9aSNIB7-eTQjBy-WraJkW147dRUk3ntWinXi5iiB-mCVSDdQVSJOKfTo4txs1McNwyDbGsZUxImidIfdJ0W6NOPVfCfNaac_dDNGPmw-c_dQjW40HzYIp4eggC2kUX/s2942/IMG_4151.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1907" data-original-width="2942" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj159KGY1_GYa3JJ0iUpXbbTLtbJp3H3oHEwtnfvtVtfvROY81haDz-flRpKwJ4_P9aSNIB7-eTQjBy-WraJkW147dRUk3ntWinXi5iiB-mCVSDdQVSJOKfTo4txs1McNwyDbGsZUxImidIfdJ0W6NOPVfCfNaac_dDNGPmw-c_dQjW40HzYIp4eggC2kUX/w411-h266/IMG_4151.jpeg" width="411" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2138" data-original-width="2956" height="284" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhb6iCB0O3a9TWkfFjvT43SOSHlr8UDxuZ5xUc4GQ7_Seebn0Cmj2HdPMYCfCrfaqbk4VCSgNTx3GIU1sexfpqkWzv_Sp3KDjBTqQZ__ONQpOdJ0cVGyxTdMo2pbOW4LX0T_0Gb84Keq4IOHE5wMLQjMtG5d-7wnhA4u_eCn3Mi1BFN9kyRiIcjUBJ-EAE9/w394-h284/IMG_4152.jpeg" width="394" /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;">I plan to test it at home but don’t want to waste too much coffee, water or fuel. But it was dry outside, a window between storms that I had to take advantage of. So I did some minor fiddling with my Peugeot and took it out for a little local spin.</p><p>The air was crisp and the temperature falling, but the sun peeked through thick clouds and the trees swayed in a light breeze, and I enjoyed myself despite the cold. </p><p>I also enjoyed the handling and ease of the Peugeot since it’s regearing. The sectioned chain gave me no trouble, not even a tiny hitch, and confirmed my position that adding pieces of off-brand chain in the exact same size to expand the length should pose no problem if all the links are properly loosened. There were no issues.</p><p>Along the way I ran into a former co-owner from my Citybikes days. It was lovely to see him. He’s embroiled in very difficult, ugly legal proceedings wherein the three other remaining co-owners want to close Citybikes down and liquidate everything, including two buildings and lots of inventory, to divide amongst themselves. N, the fourth co-owner and the only one left from my time there, wants to keep the business going. Three weeks ago, the three news co-owners changed the locks without warning and barred Noel from the shop, a completely illegal move that will make things even messier.</p><p>Meanwhile, a group of former owners continues to meet periodically, in hopes of helping to reclaim and revitalize the shop as the cooperative it once was. I am not part of that effort at all, owing to both my ongoing illness and my desire to avoid all things Citybikes (except my happier memories). Still, it was lovely to run into N and I hope he’ll be okay in the end. As for the resurrection of the business, I want no part of it. I am done with all that and happy to be on the sidelines.</p><p>I rode home after less than half an hour outside because of the cold, but was glad to ride even a little bit.</p><p>Much colder temps are due here by Friday, along with a strong probability of freezing rain and icy roads. The ideal is to bring all the gear to brew your own cup of coffee outside and enjoy it.<br />Most do this, but I haven't yet dialed in how I'd like to brew outdoors, so I make mine at home and bring it along in the thermos. My goal in the coming year is to dial in outdoor brewing on a consistent basis.<br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgVvFEHXaQ-fiiqG8C1k7K7VB2KrqzdE5nzYbac5oaylxtndHaTbDlpm8LFp7JdRwhazuVXv6uJkZiu9KlMeUQ1Fy-v4AJ8Zf-2ODTd8yonOU17BRYrQTrgZLmEfFZ1k6tG9thG1z62Emam0BJ-zmUFV9wYqpCA50JSgeVqSfozYQhyBFyUXM2PtK9j3Md/s1327/Screenshot%202023-12-30%20at%2020-25-18%20Beth%20Hamon%20(@beth.hamon.36)%20%E2%80%A2%20Instagram%20photos%20and%20videos.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; Most of the rides I participated in began at Waterfront Park, took a pleasant loop around Eastside Portland, and ended at Laurelhurst Park where we’d enjoy hot cider and cookies while ogling each other’s bikes and catching up with old friends we hadn’t seen in awhile. When the weather wasn’t horrible or icy, I looked forward to starting my year this way.<div><br /></div><div>For most of my rides, the host was the Bicycle Transportation Alliance, Portland’s grassroots bike advocacy and education organization, a group I was a longtime member and supporter of. <br /><p>When the BTA folded, as nonprofits sometimes do, the organization was reconstituted into another nonprofit and renamed the Street Trust. The emphasis became all about lobbying and rubbing shoulders with elected officials in Salem (Oregon’s capital), bicycle advocacy was watered down and combined with walking and public transit advocacy, and the education component was set aside almost completely. It became a very different organization, and not nearly as grassroots as before. So I opted not to become a member. I’ve never regretted my decision. And that’s what I’ve done most of the time, until I got sick in 2021. <div><br /></div><div>This year, Street Trust is hosting another NYD ride. This time, they’re requiring RSVP in advance and asking adults 18+ to pony up — get this — $40 each for admission and a year’s membership in the organization.<br /><div><br /></div></div><div>While they say no one will be turned away for lack of funds, there’s no provision for that on the RSVP form, so you have to tell them directly when you show up (and presumably, there’s no goodies for you at the end of the ride).</div><h4 style="text-align: left;">Ick. </h4><div>This is the same thing I struggle with in other circles in my life: if you want to participate it will cost you. If you can’t afford it, you have to say so out loud (likely in front of other people) and deal with whatever embarrassment and stigma may come from that.</div><div><br /></div><div>I don’t need this sort of crap in my life anymore. </div><div>I’m more unemployed than employed these days, and haven’t got forty bucks to spend on cookies and hot cider for an organization I’m not stoked about. I also no longer have the patience to deal with stigma, mine or anyone’s perception thereof. So I’ll have my own New Year’s ride and bring my own coffee and ts to enjoy along the way.</div><div>(Photo: on the Kogswell, Jan 2006)</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi756LyMQmQcX1MEtu1dfUkh4A10MXguf9xMduiOUnyyFhgQFxtbseE1umkfQ5EGGcRu9Y8XE2SPkuclRM5sX9UtPaPddzKMnIg8BWwckVs0YdD0o3QFBgUOQj7F6X5Uo8crehHTRW_yugZM20Rz_P8dAyqtOJKbpX3a2is92LJyy9S77USBm4UmezqLSuO/s447/kogbike.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="419" data-original-width="447" height="399" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi756LyMQmQcX1MEtu1dfUkh4A10MXguf9xMduiOUnyyFhgQFxtbseE1umkfQ5EGGcRu9Y8XE2SPkuclRM5sX9UtPaPddzKMnIg8BWwckVs0YdD0o3QFBgUOQj7F6X5Uo8crehHTRW_yugZM20Rz_P8dAyqtOJKbpX3a2is92LJyy9S77USBm4UmezqLSuO/w425-h399/kogbike.gif" width="425" /></a></div><br /><div>May all your rides in 2024 be joyful ones.</div><div>Happy riding.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div></div>bikelovejoneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16141991025526354179noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4817618840776532991.post-50045941267635972292023-12-21T20:27:00.000-08:002023-12-21T20:27:13.680-08:00Peugeot, dialed.<p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWKTNcGgOwB5ZCaP8J-rgzyzAhOgDJzv_rQPMsQl8lVyhm4GPs8gieBEuAgOaUNypNsS4TwNXd5Xj-xU1R9RXJgFbFQW2Tt0e9pFqgnHsEdS4Z1JpcAZNH0pZaAM0FXFlH-yJ__ijhNVl7LwxCBWbVyCfG5D8X_xnV5xMVNGAqKtzuR6rkel9-hZdmjq_i/s1463/IMG_3917.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1463" data-original-width="1197" height="486" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWKTNcGgOwB5ZCaP8J-rgzyzAhOgDJzv_rQPMsQl8lVyhm4GPs8gieBEuAgOaUNypNsS4TwNXd5Xj-xU1R9RXJgFbFQW2Tt0e9pFqgnHsEdS4Z1JpcAZNH0pZaAM0FXFlH-yJ__ijhNVl7LwxCBWbVyCfG5D8X_xnV5xMVNGAqKtzuR6rkel9-hZdmjq_i/w398-h486/IMG_3917.jpeg" width="398" /></a></div><br /><p></p>bikelovejoneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16141991025526354179noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4817618840776532991.post-55705046555165930772023-12-20T18:06:00.000-08:002023-12-20T19:24:53.265-08:00Ride Report: Bike Happy Hour<p><a href="https://bikeportland.org/">BikePortland</a> has been hosting a Bike Happy Hour since August, and the crowds have continued to show up every Wednesday evening. So I went about looking for a rear saddlebag rack.</p><p>I found this one online, for thirty bucks including shipping.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIISkcN96tO1sMu6NTMgWCHwC6xD9xinnjNIFos9hUrmLQrmXrdCQus1vRSUwJ8ss6CrFUz08RbUhUDPmaunP4C79n7XtP_pecCIb5gtLxIKDo_gVI5vXYboNpJ-4oSKcp0S5hRG8e_EHoc6v3OWPHP7BlMoAElLxRdGt_-YOZbLXaedsVwkHeQBER18qD/s2048/IMG_3890.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1926" height="432" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIISkcN96tO1sMu6NTMgWCHwC6xD9xinnjNIFos9hUrmLQrmXrdCQus1vRSUwJ8ss6CrFUz08RbUhUDPmaunP4C79n7XtP_pecCIb5gtLxIKDo_gVI5vXYboNpJ-4oSKcp0S5hRG8e_EHoc6v3OWPHP7BlMoAElLxRdGt_-YOZbLXaedsVwkHeQBER18qD/w407-h432/IMG_3890.jpeg" width="407" /></a></div>As you can see, it came with a lot of surface rust and some old black paint. After mulling it over for a couple of weeks, I decided I would get it sandblasted and powder coated professionally, an expensive choice but one that ensure a thorough job and longer life.<div><br /></div><div>After asking for suggestions and calling around, I took it to Portland Powder Coating. They were one of the few shops that were willing to work with so small an item and, if I was willing to wait a little longer, they would wait and toss it in at the end of a larger paint run to save me some money.</div><div><br /></div><div>They also had a few choices of color that would get it at least close to the finish on my front rack.</div><div><br /></div><div>I picked it up today, it looked good, though the clamps were too small and too corroded to save. I’ll get some new, rubber-coated clamps in the right size made of stainless steel, and use those to install it.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2fHgMgRO5N5z5lGRJT-35QGmniWZFzr3CZwunGmVcrqk8kKNztL_kXXwKe6RH4s_hOco8y18_e2qEPJPqKm0MOXeD0Q4VaYIzVGxzVtnBDDT-vUswfns5uGHOub2q_7vBlCjsXwAs5utsAo4Ukb1EHMS4YVNmQd22lCHGWFEp8OtvFhzubZd8Jjv6ZxfF/s2048/IMG_3889.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="297" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2fHgMgRO5N5z5lGRJT-35QGmniWZFzr3CZwunGmVcrqk8kKNztL_kXXwKe6RH4s_hOco8y18_e2qEPJPqKm0MOXeD0Q4VaYIzVGxzVtnBDDT-vUswfns5uGHOub2q_7vBlCjsXwAs5utsAo4Ukb1EHMS4YVNmQd22lCHGWFEp8OtvFhzubZd8Jjv6ZxfF/w396-h297/IMG_3889.jpeg" width="396" /></a></div><br /><div>When I got it home, I held up the pieces next to my front rack to see how close the color matched.</div><div>They nailed it.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXT3VWCq7pmIGK-pECHhuBfy-Xxy5E4cqmwCUQiDL91vj9SdO4kJPu7nNq6ZR0kSVd8j6bXI0rF1jotGgEUNXxE0d03ZwZ_ZuUrZdtVuWOwGn0YXYluEthDHmnAJP8K3RGepPgEvTtGcXRaqg-JRfOmpdo97Q2OYR_Zl1NSLEwroUMBHwPQehTo7Lv39CT/s2048/IMG_3891.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="314" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXT3VWCq7pmIGK-pECHhuBfy-Xxy5E4cqmwCUQiDL91vj9SdO4kJPu7nNq6ZR0kSVd8j6bXI0rF1jotGgEUNXxE0d03ZwZ_ZuUrZdtVuWOwGn0YXYluEthDHmnAJP8K3RGepPgEvTtGcXRaqg-JRfOmpdo97Q2OYR_Zl1NSLEwroUMBHwPQehTo7Lv39CT/w419-h314/IMG_3891.jpeg" width="419" /></a></div><br /><div>I’ll pick up the clamps next week and put it all together. It’s not a big rack, but it will be perfect for lifting my saddlebag just enough to keep things from spilling out of it. And it’s nice to save something old by fixing it up and making it nice again.</div>bikelovejoneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16141991025526354179noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4817618840776532991.post-78156859564476667872023-11-29T13:38:00.000-08:002023-11-29T13:40:06.935-08:00It’s done for now. (Bagmatching)<p>I found a nice little canvas bag to mount on the front rack.</p><p>I needed it to be small because of the rack’s size and configuration (resting on the canti bosses, it can’t carry a lot of weight). So I found a used Zimbale front rack bag for less than half of new, bought it and repainted it to match the rear bag.</p><p>I used watered-down acrylic paint that I mixed and shook up in a jar, and a little sponge paint applicator.</p><p>Since the rear bag is faded and looks used, if I got a little paint on the leather trim and only did one coat, it would be close enough in shade that sun and time would fade it a little more and I’d be fine. I managed to use some warm water to wipe off most the fresh paint that got on the leather trim, adding a more used look to it. I’m pleased with how it turned out.</p><p>The bag is not a perfect fit. The rack is slightly wider and I had to use the carry strap as the rear loop around the back. It’s secure and I don’t think I’ll worry about tightening up or sewing on a bucket or anything. Plus, I can’t see anyone really wanting to steal so small a bag unless they try to remove the rack as well, and that would take tools and time.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhU0dS0k8z7Kn0gtbRkdvldNwE8g1OTuEQMyeUiA9UyoloE9OTfqZkZ9QBfC54bsE-JsHHHUKkR_66XB2Cg0MEgWDSKX7TaG2Wq5VAhdBn8QwNxU3fwuopM50fV64__UUoyuWqfLYXkoDaf3Ah5hUk9QZ1DFySCF6i9drjJ1Ad8X3IA2u8nfNfuxogMfhE8/s905/IMG_3782.jpeg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="458" data-original-width="905" height="243" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhU0dS0k8z7Kn0gtbRkdvldNwE8g1OTuEQMyeUiA9UyoloE9OTfqZkZ9QBfC54bsE-JsHHHUKkR_66XB2Cg0MEgWDSKX7TaG2Wq5VAhdBn8QwNxU3fwuopM50fV64__UUoyuWqfLYXkoDaf3Ah5hUk9QZ1DFySCF6i9drjJ1Ad8X3IA2u8nfNfuxogMfhE8/w480-h243/IMG_3782.jpeg" width="480" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8iVJTXVVHLkOJl5mPfLo1sssfXrGkRSucqrw3hP_2wPkV38UTVu5VqldSabagZFn1XXkyfBq9a55GYRChA8GWLR4WVJLm3PtCuq2a0hroxvU-y_tDDLZUOUdOb1Hl5dQWK9fM7G-23Cq4dbKhn2XARmt1WH6N-QHwxSOYA2TCGC18jzKoyjkIZinb0Z_5/s3024/IMG_6251.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8iVJTXVVHLkOJl5mPfLo1sssfXrGkRSucqrw3hP_2wPkV38UTVu5VqldSabagZFn1XXkyfBq9a55GYRChA8GWLR4WVJLm3PtCuq2a0hroxvU-y_tDDLZUOUdOb1Hl5dQWK9fM7G-23Cq4dbKhn2XARmt1WH6N-QHwxSOYA2TCGC18jzKoyjkIZinb0Z_5/s320/IMG_6251.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQYvfk2pFoWsvbiNLNGRz-1VlA0riRc77Bw_NJyleVbOTiCsLPueWy2T9cAcZZyp3HRuCuu9SIcE1FlcmzANtl7BUhZK7zrUS7ZGQ0-bK6m5lluaU2wF3mCKrtnYj18cvcZmmNMTAv27JsXKsVpb4SMwPw3uHPNOreLS-xIsKZ4LNogLVL3-r0afJmqe-f/s3024/IMG_6256.jpeg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="3024" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQYvfk2pFoWsvbiNLNGRz-1VlA0riRc77Bw_NJyleVbOTiCsLPueWy2T9cAcZZyp3HRuCuu9SIcE1FlcmzANtl7BUhZK7zrUS7ZGQ0-bK6m5lluaU2wF3mCKrtnYj18cvcZmmNMTAv27JsXKsVpb4SMwPw3uHPNOreLS-xIsKZ4LNogLVL3-r0afJmqe-f/w424-h424/IMG_6256.jpeg" width="424" /></a></div>I really like having a small bag up front. It completes the look of the bike in a very nice way, and it’s just big enough to hold a sack lunch, a small bottle of juice and maybe a scarf. <div><br /></div><div>The bigger stuff can go in or on the rear bag.<br /><p>It has gotten very cold here n Portland, with overnight lows just below freezing. I’m not super-inclined to go for a ride today, but rain and 2mer temps are coming and I might try to enjoy a short ride this weekend.</p><p>There’s still a few more things to do on this bike, like swapping in smaller chainrings and getting my rear saddlebag rack back from the powder coasters, but those are minor and don’t do a lot to add to the overall look of the bike. So for all intents and purposes it’s basically done.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFJI00CdIym7UlQosBj6ksbUHC1NDwLtrqluQshCEgIUFLbssJOIfhxFVTgL_Rg1TPTkEoTxedHwfr9kgD01Z-uVincApaxkW_v-oOvFiI1Jn8Uu7GC1stR28DrFZMcTZoNy7Ni8jcs-Dvz0e1MLw369dpwk3VFXtwuPE9iHD8oRRsI_EzcJarPH7URWCP/s3856/IMG_6252.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2892" data-original-width="3856" height="268" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFJI00CdIym7UlQosBj6ksbUHC1NDwLtrqluQshCEgIUFLbssJOIfhxFVTgL_Rg1TPTkEoTxedHwfr9kgD01Z-uVincApaxkW_v-oOvFiI1Jn8Uu7GC1stR28DrFZMcTZoNy7Ni8jcs-Dvz0e1MLw369dpwk3VFXtwuPE9iHD8oRRsI_EzcJarPH7URWCP/w357-h268/IMG_6252.jpeg" width="357" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7oKWFbeBs-OxGKT_M5XYG7BCjh6g5cJ5KAlNJ7Jw72ilBmUnbM6rynebUFoQbRkyMPQycToFhZm2cPrRyVYtVfMhRaharEIEvK2BVwhJCMvgyaU6unn-L32WY9Us8uJwQUR2WQ26iv_oQD7SGkfZDRZJw8OJdHhuc1ntroXrc5FDLzbe_LAWWBn2KFwGc/s3024/IMG_6253.jpeg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="2606" height="434" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7oKWFbeBs-OxGKT_M5XYG7BCjh6g5cJ5KAlNJ7Jw72ilBmUnbM6rynebUFoQbRkyMPQycToFhZm2cPrRyVYtVfMhRaharEIEvK2BVwhJCMvgyaU6unn-L32WY9Us8uJwQUR2WQ26iv_oQD7SGkfZDRZJw8OJdHhuc1ntroXrc5FDLzbe_LAWWBn2KFwGc/w374-h434/IMG_6253.jpeg" width="374" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAWRJZiBhez8K-nwD8fVVSFn4rXlIBx4F1JuhGzwo3HSIkcUgMaf0piKOC8UHooKQZtSfpl-o5jt6itKnd1XAa4JMDAXUd72qm48G8vGSbIuwVEO1PMj3U3__r453pKcpVsouMIf2N9XUeMvfMNpQvPcB8MEsCIP__nG1a_F3NddWiT_Rz-Si4R8ezBi3n/s2774/IMG_6255.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2774" data-original-width="2764" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAWRJZiBhez8K-nwD8fVVSFn4rXlIBx4F1JuhGzwo3HSIkcUgMaf0piKOC8UHooKQZtSfpl-o5jt6itKnd1XAa4JMDAXUd72qm48G8vGSbIuwVEO1PMj3U3__r453pKcpVsouMIf2N9XUeMvfMNpQvPcB8MEsCIP__nG1a_F3NddWiT_Rz-Si4R8ezBi3n/s320/IMG_6255.jpeg" width="319" /></a></div></div>bikelovejoneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16141991025526354179noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4817618840776532991.post-38880532969285232482023-11-21T21:56:00.000-08:002023-11-22T18:43:52.499-08:00Cheap parts from China vs. expensive parts from somewhere else. Go ahead, judge me.<p>In retrofitting the Peugeot, I’ve had to make some decisions about where to source replacement parts.</p><p>Some parts, like the Suntour thumb shifters and freewheel, were easy enough to source locally on the used market or from my existing stash, at minimal cost. Some pars, like the handlebar and the Brooks saddle, were sourced at discounted prices on eBay or Facebook Marketplace. </p><p>Still others pose a bit of an ethical and/or environmental quandary.</p><p>I’m re-gearing the bike to a lower/easier range of gears for the hilly landscape of Eastside Portland. I started with swapping in a larger freewheel, but that wasn’t going to be enough. Photo below shows the drivetrain after I swapped in the bigger freewheel, a Suntour 14-30.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNviikIXt3NXLs78bpmKnh0QlVtXKfAH1hoqhyIwCo_GxcUubi3BSJmLd31ffd_0ryqKFgm1uqu0XBA57wyMmSJSZYoGG9y9tw2L3iURzySiUQ9duYyg8tlOvgXVCAvySjSdeTjeKg_3W2-OJ9KOuYMeLTbmL8MU4tTzK3kLuKB1Ss3kFTaI4bNtUhOTiW/s2048/IMG_3639.jpeg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1494" data-original-width="2048" height="326" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNviikIXt3NXLs78bpmKnh0QlVtXKfAH1hoqhyIwCo_GxcUubi3BSJmLd31ffd_0ryqKFgm1uqu0XBA57wyMmSJSZYoGG9y9tw2L3iURzySiUQ9duYyg8tlOvgXVCAvySjSdeTjeKg_3W2-OJ9KOuYMeLTbmL8MU4tTzK3kLuKB1Ss3kFTaI4bNtUhOTiW/w447-h326/IMG_3639.jpeg" width="447" /></a></div><p>Look at the size of the middle and big rings there, 42 and 52. (Does any casual cyclist push a 52 anymore?)</p><p>My plan is to swap in a 38 for the middle ring, and replace the 52 outer ring with a chain guard of roughly 42t, similar to what I have on the All Rounder. This will give me a more comfortable gear range to ride around town and give my creaky knees a break.</p><p>The challenge comes when trying to source an alloy chainguard ring. I basically have two choices:</p><p>One is the Rivendell chainguard, which is made in Taiwan, I think. It retails for $46. Very shiny and comes with an attractive, weight-saving cutout design. I sprang for one of these on my All-Rounder and it’s perfect in every way.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGrMkTUOlVGZNdsWyTXPUqBS84-F6EzPpjwSZYGU660EiHKL9pUyW-Ddnj-mHRIqUlOtPshPx29PZIaHsLpAICH_aCi81JDJA_01xidAFNYBAWYyf-FkdzYoxX_PO3RzFTfYR5-2HmsVWyhvnls6WEVDamQdY5lGyg3ubJe2sKa4_h5D-10TYDZfi086cY/s1796/IMG_3726.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1324" data-original-width="1796" height="291" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGrMkTUOlVGZNdsWyTXPUqBS84-F6EzPpjwSZYGU660EiHKL9pUyW-Ddnj-mHRIqUlOtPshPx29PZIaHsLpAICH_aCi81JDJA_01xidAFNYBAWYyf-FkdzYoxX_PO3RzFTfYR5-2HmsVWyhvnls6WEVDamQdY5lGyg3ubJe2sKa4_h5D-10TYDZfi086cY/w395-h291/IMG_3726.jpeg" width="395" /></a></div><p>Then, I found a much simpler alloy chainguard through Aliexpress, which is an electronic retail storefront for the juggernaut Chinese wholesale clearinghouse Alibaba. The chainguard is not nearly as pretty, but it’s alloy and will get the job done just as handily. It retails for $21, $17 for the ring and $4 postage from their US-based warehouse.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhA-5Gpc4g0mIKp_Uu51TQ_Tc6xxriJGz9RyLquxTpmzu7YhVBTYyLDfy6HZx2LTRMGydugvZEPykhHUnEHmEYOL3Ltyl4jjwY2G_exM1AmoVFUJUkqODZ0EzL6La1N2kc3nCeyhmNjZD1rhj6rXliQNf40SRC_9tfWfo7MlTr6QGchbR3suy6IA6NGuv7n/s2048/IMG_3724.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1345" data-original-width="2048" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhA-5Gpc4g0mIKp_Uu51TQ_Tc6xxriJGz9RyLquxTpmzu7YhVBTYyLDfy6HZx2LTRMGydugvZEPykhHUnEHmEYOL3Ltyl4jjwY2G_exM1AmoVFUJUkqODZ0EzL6La1N2kc3nCeyhmNjZD1rhj6rXliQNf40SRC_9tfWfo7MlTr6QGchbR3suy6IA6NGuv7n/w404-h265/IMG_3724.jpeg" width="404" /></a></div>The quandary in this case, since Alibaba is shipping from a US warehouse, is ethical: do I want to buy the Rivendell part and support a small business her in the US, or do I want to be economical and buy the Chinese-made part, which supports a factory halfway around the world with questionable workers rights and environmental practices?<div><br /></div><div>If I were Rivendell’s typical customer, a middle-aged guy with a fair amount of disposable income, I’d easily and happily opt for the Rivendell part. But the fact is that the Rivendellian aesthetic has been with us for thirty years (more, if you count GP’s time at Bridgestone), and there are many thousands of riders who love the aesthetic but can’t afford it. This is why Carradice has inspired Zimbale, Brooks has inspired Cardiff and Nitto has launched a thousand copies vis-a-vis Wald, Sunlite and Soma. </div><div><br /></div><div>Manufacturers and sellers have been getting us to ape the rich since the beginning of the Industrial Age, at least. Rivendell’s aesthetic simply pushed the envelope farther forward. </div><div>(It did a lot worse than that when GP got on the 650b wagon, which I think sold many more tires in that size than Jan Heine and his elite speed-freak club. But I digress.)</div><div><br /></div><div>So I’m one of the proles who like some of the good ideas from GP but can’t pay for the first edition.</div><div><br /></div><div>And while I could make consumer choices with the rest of the world in mind, my individual choices, sadly, won’t roll back climate change or improve the workers’ lot in China. Only huge, industrial-scale choices can do that. I wish it was otherwise, but not even writing to my Congressional Representatives will increase the heft of my influence. Fifty years of tilting at the windmill that is the US Congress has taught me that.</div><div><br /></div><div>Sue me. Once you find a setup that really works, you tend to replicate it with each new bike (unless you’re setting up a very specific purpose-driven affair, like a time-trial bike).</p><p>Here’s a photographic rundown of my preferred bicycle setup. What’s missing is a photo of the very first bike I set up myself, my “apprentice” bike from when I worked at Q’s Bike Shop in Waldport. I loved that bike, but it got wrecked in a collision with a truck door a few years after I built it up, and after that I transitioned to turning mountain bikes into city bikes.</p><p>Peugeot Orient Express, round one. Built up in the early 2000s while I worked at Citybikes. I loved the frame and bought it from the shop. Even though it was too big for me, I made it work for several years until forced to switch to a smaller frame. Still one of my favorite builds, with a Brooks B67 saddle and WALD 8095 “touring” bar.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyPcFvctw4wp5lFbI_IOCuLFlrbBbUZ39QUqVS7a2ZNnwPVimLdRa3eAxNPdLuqVjYAi_BfGISF_LDauvNvO6Y3NpSLMXtIrNnQJot-DWeO4pFHHLB1b2aEHUdxpY39xTWL5rhiIxVG4hImfaSybQOxc0j0XkpuhEcMUIftYRiOpBAgXaG-4nRolWQnSSs/s800/IMG_3540.jpeg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="507" data-original-width="800" height="279" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyPcFvctw4wp5lFbI_IOCuLFlrbBbUZ39QUqVS7a2ZNnwPVimLdRa3eAxNPdLuqVjYAi_BfGISF_LDauvNvO6Y3NpSLMXtIrNnQJot-DWeO4pFHHLB1b2aEHUdxpY39xTWL5rhiIxVG4hImfaSybQOxc0j0XkpuhEcMUIftYRiOpBAgXaG-4nRolWQnSSs/w439-h279/IMG_3540.jpeg" width="439" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p>Also missing is a photo of the 70s Gitane road bike I rebuilt with upright bars, as a stand-in for the Rivendell LongLow I had on order. I rode that bike for the year I waited, and left it with a former roommate who’s bike had been stolen when the LongLow frame set arrived. It was light and fast, and fun to ride.</p><p>Then the Rivendell LongLow arrived in September 2000. I bought this frame set with money from the settlement from the collision that destroyed my “apprentice” bike, and built it up from the frame. It went through a couple of drop-bar interactions before I rebuilt it with another WALD 8095 bar. I was happier, and rode it that way for several years. It was a beautiful bike and I loved the looks I got from folks who knew what they were looking at.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpfsXfYIFA1pdtW_aA3Sxg7TxML1C6LOWRiTNcas2iU1C6cFhaJo2Sy1SbGaHIwxRHxvhB6_H0hBOJUyLLN7tcSN5wRQpO-TYH6acn8MwDQh8eOQFcwu4feEIUEA44TZaI3DRkiuZojkAX7OBQ7h0hGn6rYan6LDEsolHI-xhGJSJOR11eHC1U3nGUn9Tt/s800/IMG_3536.jpeg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="570" data-original-width="800" height="312" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpfsXfYIFA1pdtW_aA3Sxg7TxML1C6LOWRiTNcas2iU1C6cFhaJo2Sy1SbGaHIwxRHxvhB6_H0hBOJUyLLN7tcSN5wRQpO-TYH6acn8MwDQh8eOQFcwu4feEIUEA44TZaI3DRkiuZojkAX7OBQ7h0hGn6rYan6LDEsolHI-xhGJSJOR11eHC1U3nGUn9Tt/w439-h312/IMG_3536.jpeg" width="439" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p>In 2006, I was invited by Matthew Grimm of Kogswell Cycles to be one of five test-builders for a new frame design of his. Called the Porteur, it was envisioned as a bike that, depending on the fork selected and the build, could work as a randonner, a front-load “porteur” delivery bike, or a full-on, loaded touring bike. I was given a frame set and fork in my size, and instructed to build it up with my choice of parts and write up a detailed report on the process and the test riding afterwards. I enjoyed the process, was honored to be the only woman on the test-build list (he needed a tester under 5’10”!) and learned a lot from the experience. It took 650b wheels, a wheel size I wasn’t prepared to live with long term and saw no need to support; at my height, there wasn’t enough of a difference in ride quality between 650b and 559 (normal MTB 26” wheel size) to matter. After trying it out in various configurations and submitting my reports, I eventually sold the finished bike to a fellow randonneur rider. She passed away a number of years ago and I have no idea where that bike is today. (Sadly, Kogswell faced a number of financial and technical issues and closed down some time in the 2010’s.)</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8Xz8r1q9OTeDyTwTLdS25t38LMnfWo9xvv1KfopMcN_sdKi6LNOVTmQqQtxtKFPpQ-ivS9XRmyH-VoWs0gT5eSdEMM7J9odp_ku797suVGzd3wq2G5hIwr3EEnvlBA8sQ_XA4pyAqjUYxZzx1F7iiVbVlLvAxpCGO50hdxBE7zsfqmYlAA1jD8Bzhi0XS/s800/IMG_3543.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="608" data-original-width="800" height="331" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8Xz8r1q9OTeDyTwTLdS25t38LMnfWo9xvv1KfopMcN_sdKi6LNOVTmQqQtxtKFPpQ-ivS9XRmyH-VoWs0gT5eSdEMM7J9odp_ku797suVGzd3wq2G5hIwr3EEnvlBA8sQ_XA4pyAqjUYxZzx1F7iiVbVlLvAxpCGO50hdxBE7zsfqmYlAA1jD8Bzhi0XS/w436-h331/IMG_3543.jpeg" width="436" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">In 2007, I obtained a Rivendell All-Rounder frame set from a rider who no longer used it. Built the same year as my LongLow, it accepted 26”/559 MTB wheels and had plenty of room for fenders. the All-Rounder was the precursor to the Rivendell Atlantis, the frame I’d really wanted in 1999 when I went frame shopping. But the Atlantis was still in testing and the All-Rounder was no longer being made so I’d chosen the LongLow. At the time I’d gone around and around with Grant [Peterson] about the frame geometry, and was assured he’d honor my wishes. When the frame arrived I built it up and spent a long time swapping parts in and out for a good fit. Finally, I assumed that it was as good as it could be, and I lived with it.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">When thenAll-Rounder arrived and I built it up, the perfect fit that had been so elusive on the LongLow was achieved with my first choice of stem and bar. After finishing the All-Rounder and riding it a little while, I measured the LongLow — something I should’ve done when it first arrived, admittedly — and discovered that Grant had changed the geometry to fit his ideas anyway. I’d been riding a bike with a top tube that was three cm too long for me. No wonder I couldn’t get a perfect fit!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I tore down the LongLow and sold it on eBay, with no regrets. I’m still riding the All-Rounder, and it still fits me perfectly. I occasionally still dream of owning a Toyo-era Atlantis, but that ship sailed long ago. So I get to be very happy with what I have.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGkC_arlvl23oTVcBuCGAO1mwqBi7WMA1pk6FZGFpgy2XiNzOHrOKvjUQc1AgIxgNkLrUhh2UsoVhmp196WkmPSsnEIssfde1aDFnYSC72LWmyBCcXUcjqjYGupIXBMJBPAN6k6NP5rHblntHAmWGk_Eyg8j1VSYwqD5Mj_45tZo4yoTlqFQXmDdQRqfpo/s1280/IMG_3678.jpeg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="958" data-original-width="1280" height="316" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGkC_arlvl23oTVcBuCGAO1mwqBi7WMA1pk6FZGFpgy2XiNzOHrOKvjUQc1AgIxgNkLrUhh2UsoVhmp196WkmPSsnEIssfde1aDFnYSC72LWmyBCcXUcjqjYGupIXBMJBPAN6k6NP5rHblntHAmWGk_Eyg8j1VSYwqD5Mj_45tZo4yoTlqFQXmDdQRqfpo/w422-h316/IMG_3678.jpeg" width="422" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">While the all-Rounder was running drops, I bought a Bridgestone MB4 from a guy in trade for a Thomson seatpost. He’d set it up for racing, and I tore it down and rebuilt is a heavy-hauler (I had no trailer at the time). I’m especially proud of the homemade cargo rack I built from scrap parts; I once used it to bring home a bedroom nightstand I found at curbside. When I put uprights on the All-Rounder, the MB4 became redundant, so I sold it to a college student.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigdv_IqQ7V4YEDGUdb5q9H7i2d05cOUAhqUI8F7zu1txm1xuhgMVhRlN7zstco5muiEX-rl-QNXvETQE71LMvrEQbTGQn0CAZ-9rf3HrAqp61fvh8DBvDYFU3SaWk7_idBSiJa-AQQjC4pZigoc7KY18ZSmFf0sTeGvI2kkqMTQ30VcrBzcwHMMv8T3juN/s1358/IMG_3681.jpeg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="976" data-original-width="1358" height="319" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigdv_IqQ7V4YEDGUdb5q9H7i2d05cOUAhqUI8F7zu1txm1xuhgMVhRlN7zstco5muiEX-rl-QNXvETQE71LMvrEQbTGQn0CAZ-9rf3HrAqp61fvh8DBvDYFU3SaWk7_idBSiJa-AQQjC4pZigoc7KY18ZSmFf0sTeGvI2kkqMTQ30VcrBzcwHMMv8T3juN/w443-h319/IMG_3681.jpeg" width="443" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">At the same time I was fiddling with the Bridgestone, I had a recurring gig in Kansas every June for six years. I was gone for a month at a time, and needed a bike and trailer to ride between my homestay and the synagogue I was hired by. For my second summer, I built up an abandoned bike and shipped it to the synagogue, where it lived for six summers while I came and went. At the end of my final summer session, I let the rabbi know it would be my last, and I boxed up the bike to ship it home. It eventually was tuned up and donated as part of my little Refugee Bikes Project.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNypNQP1QuI9ZuXwRb6MGCrCYQWf60CQtZEKL0gaR0ypSzBwRe2cRmBJOA1kYHlyogZsluc_qBejR5jVbSvWw5utJhC3e-HvPicCG2i5j6N40rRF8f6w_Uq98uS0cvTmriF9HwOXyAPT_LY6IZW637Yd4LW1KP2T96-0NtzeTfaHg8COkn3ReYOwqosyfs/s1415/IMG_3670.jpeg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1415" height="277" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNypNQP1QuI9ZuXwRb6MGCrCYQWf60CQtZEKL0gaR0ypSzBwRe2cRmBJOA1kYHlyogZsluc_qBejR5jVbSvWw5utJhC3e-HvPicCG2i5j6N40rRF8f6w_Uq98uS0cvTmriF9HwOXyAPT_LY6IZW637Yd4LW1KP2T96-0NtzeTfaHg8COkn3ReYOwqosyfs/w435-h277/IMG_3670.jpeg" width="435" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">1988 Peugeot Orient Express. I missed my old ‘86 Peugeot and I’d spent the better part of a decade looking for one in my size. I couldn’t find an ‘86 in my size with its beautiful, medieval-looking fork crown for under five hundred dollars. But I lucked out with this ‘88 model in very nice shape. It had been overhauled by a home mechanic who was fixing up old bikes to help make ends meet.
